07:23 pm - I Want To Want

I was browsing through Reaching For The Invisible God by Philip Yancey last night and I came across this quote by St. Teresa of Avila: "Oh God, I don’t love you, I don’t even want to love you, but I want to want to love you!"

This quote hit me right between the eyes because it rings true. In fact I have worded many prayers in almost exactly the same way--telling God that I didn't want to, but I wanted to want to--without realizing that I was echoing a saint. It cheered me up. Sometimes I know I don't want to do the right thing, but I want to want to do the right thing. Sometimes I know I don't want to strive to be holy, but I want to want to be holy. I thought that this was insufficient, that my will to do His Will was too weak, but maybe it's enough for Him after all.

... I think a whole lot of us non-saints are suddenly feeling a lot better. :-)
